Melasma 101

Melasma is a unique discoloration in the skin that appears as hyperpigmentation (usually on parts of the skin that are exposed to the sun). It can appear as a result of sun damage and/or hormonal shifts in the body. Because of the hormonal factor, melasma commonly occurs during/after pregnancy, menopause and can accompany medical conditions like pcos. This makes it difficult to treat.

When it comes to home care the most important tip is to stay out of the sun. Wearing sun hats and uv clothing is encouraged. Being diligent about sunscreen appliCATION (and reapplication) is also extREMELY imPORTANT!

one ingredient that has been very effective in melasma and other complex hyperpigmentation treatment is cysteamine. There are very few brands using this ingredient which makes it pricey. a combo of cysteamine home care and professional treatments with an esthetician or derm will likely yield the best possible results.
