We Need to Talk About Angela White

There is a shift happening in the beauty industry right before our eyes. Everything around the subject of celebrities removing/reducing their surgically enhanced bodies has been pretty mysterious and speculative until now thanks to Angela White (formerly Blacc Chyna).

She is allowing us to witness the journey of removing the enhancements from her body. This includes removing breast implants, dissolving the filler in her face and undergoing a surgery to remove silicone shots from her lower body.

Having this conversation about beauty and a woman who has profited so much from the industry of plastic surgery is extrEMELY nuanced. It requires us to be honest about our views on personal growth, sex workers, women’s health, Black beauty standards, addiction and much much more. I think one very great point Angela made in her interview on the tamron hall show was that most of the services she was getting were free. Many of the famous people are getting these services to be walking billboards in partnership with shady doctors/medical professionals.

As a beauty professional, I have seen a major shift in Black women’s relationship with procedures like fillers, botox and “ethnic nose jobs”. It used to be an unwritten rule in the Black community to not “mess with” your face. in the interview, Also mentioned how she was trying to achieve a more “chiseled look” with fillers- then immediately stating that she already had the look naturally. This also brings me to the question of how many people are trying to change what’s already been perfected?

Part of my job is to listen to my client’s concerns about their appearance and the fact is that the things people are dissatisfied with typically change with trends. For example, first world problems like thigh gaps, hip dips and flipped lips suddenly became a thing. I’m still not fully sure what any of them are but I’m 100% sure these trends will pass within the next 5-10 years.

For me, being safe is the most impoRTANT factor. Making sure to keep up with primary care before even considering any type of surgeries or injections of foreign objects as they could literally kill you. Also, finding doctors and medical professionals who are doing ethical and safe work. This might mean doing extensive research but I believe that your health and your life are worth it. MAking these choices safely can help to prevent medical complications and save you money in the long run.
